In Scotland, there are around 25,000 people starting a Modern Apprenticeship each year. The initiative which gives young people the chance to combine a qualification with on-the-job experience has been championed by ACCESS since 2010. Hiring a number of fresh talented minds across the organisation, we have seen many of our modern apprentices build valuable work experience from day one, as well as, grow with confidence into young professionals ready for the next step in their career.
Last month, we saw our final Modern Apprentices take the limelight at our Modern Apprentice Graduation as they completed their final year. At the event held on Monday 12th June, we asked our four Modern apprentices to celebrate this important milestone by each giving a presentation of their achievements culminating with the main highlight of their time here. Here's what they had to say:-
"Before I started the company I was very shy and was not very good at speaking to people in person or over the phone. Working on a Service Desk for the past year has allowed me to grow as an analyst and helped my confidence. Definite highlights would be organising the bake sale and raising over £1500 for Teenage Cancer Research."
Shannon Fern, Service Desk Analyst
"Throughout my time in ACCESS I haven't just gained knowledge in OD & CI but I have gained confidence, loads of life skills, a lot of new friends and a permanent job. One of the highlights for me was Christmas jumper day as regardless with everything going on at the time everyone came together to raise money for a good cause and it got everyone in total high spirits for Christmas."
Shannon Stokes, Learning and Development Assistant
"I started my journey in ACCESS over a year and a half ago. Since then I have gained a vast amount of knowledge in IT. I also have been given the chance to meet some great people and have had some great memories. I am grateful for all of the opportunities access has given me and made some good friends also. The big challenge for myself was coming straight out of school and starting a full time job, but with the support of everyone on the service desk I was able to transition comfortably."
Hammad Rehman, Service Desk Analyst
"It would be highly impossible to sum up everything I have learned from my time as an apprentice. It has taught me a great deal more about IT, customer services, specific technologies within the industry, and it has also taught me how to successfully operate within the workplace. This has led to a huge boost in confidence that has made me feel ready to tackle any challenges the future holds. I would have to say the highlight of my time here has mainly been interactions with colleagues on the desk. On the service desk there is a bond between analysts. Being a part of this and working as a genuine team will be something that will always stick out to me about my time here."
Chris McCafferty, Service Desk Analyst
All of our Modern Apprentices have truly worked hard, earned their qualification and really impressed our teams here in ACCESS. Their determination and commitment throughout the process has really paid off with many of them succeeding in gaining permanent jobs, both externally and within the ACCESS family.
Our Talent & Leadership Development Manager, Debbie Niven, had these final words to say:-
"The apprenticeship scheme has been a brilliant way at identifying young talented minds, helping them get on the first steps of their career ladder, as well as, seeing them develop as young professionals. It's been a great privilege to be part of this for so many years and I wish all our apprentices success in the future."
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Modern Apprentices who have joined ACCESS throughout the years the best of luck in their future endeavours.
